As the Asian American population grows, training potential Chinese American political candidates and community leaders become more critical. For the purpose of cultivating and strengthening our young people’s leadership skills, OCAW has been sponsoring scholarships for the Presidential Classroom Program in Washington, DC each year since 1980.
The program is chaired by Ru Fan, and is generously funded by the T. L. Tsui and Julie H. Hwa Scholarship Funds. The scholarships are open for Chinese American junior or senior high school students. Scholarship committee members include Christina Wong Poy and Pauline Tsui.
The Presidential Classroom is known as one of the nation’s premier civic education programs. It provides the opportunities for the participating student leaders to meet with and discuss issues with some of the country’s most influential leaders. Participant students also get to observe Congress in action, attend briefings at Federal agencies, and visit the renowned sites of the nation’s capital.
